About the Foundation
An environmental charity for nature, climate, and the communities on the front line.
Dedicated to environmental education and to protecting the natural world — raising environmental and climate concerns where decisions are made, and standing with those closest to the crisis.
Foundation for Gaia is a UK-registered environmental charity dedicated to environmental education and to the protection and sustainable management of natural resources. Established in 1988, we work to protect the natural world and to confront the environmental and climate crisis — and to bring these concerns to the international forums where decisions are made.
Our role is a practical one. We raise environmental and climate concerns at the United Nations and in international climate negotiations, we build understanding of how these mechanisms work, and we help those closest to environmental harm — including Indigenous peoples, minorities and local communities — take part in the decisions that affect them. Our concern is the health of ecosystems around the world — the forests, rivers, coasts and landscapes that sustain life, and the communities who depend on them.
The pressures on the natural world are mounting — deforestation, extraction, unsustainable land use and a changing climate — and they cross every border. We work to ensure that environmental and climate concerns are not only heard by those with the power to act, but acted upon — and that the people closest to the harm are heard alongside them, consistent with the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.
Our vision
A world in which the natural world is protected and restored — and in which those who defend it, from local communities to Indigenous peoples, can help shape the decisions that affect our shared future, free from persecution.
